On the eve of another 9/11: Vigilance, America

American FlagHere we are, on the eve of another solemn anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Nearly 3,000 people died in the collapse of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, at the Pentagon in Washington and in a field in remote Somerset County, Pa. Thousands more were injured. The nation, deeply scarred.

All manner of security measures -- liberty restrictions in the name of protecting liberty -- have been in place since then. And no matter if we laud or detest them, the fact remains that the United States has not experienced a major terrorist attack since then.

Which, given the following tale, is nothing less than a miracle.

Friday last, a reporter and a videographer for The Daily Caller drove unchallenged into the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay, 50 miles from Washington, D.C. The security checkpoint was unmanned. The guard booth was padlocked. The pair made their way to a parking lot a mere 550 feet away from one of the facility's two nuclear reactors.

What if this had been terrorists?

On Monday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission defended its security practices. Our enemies certainly will take great comfort in that statement.

Thirteen years after its most horrendous day, America cannot afford such lapses.

Coming tomorrow: Patriot Day 2014: Never forget!
