lewinsky_clintonMonica Lewinsky has broken her nearly 10-year silence to write about her affair with President Bill Clinton, saying she wants to"take back my narrative and give a purpose to my past".

The former White House intern, now 40, writes in Vanity Fair magazine that "it's time to burn the beret and bury the blue dress".

The dress, worn during one sexual encounter with the president, was submitted as evidence during Ken Starr's investigation into the affair.

In the article, which is slated to hit newsstands on May 13, Ms Lewinsky also maintains that her relationship with the president was "consensual" and denies rumours that she was silenced by a big pay-off from the Clintons.

She writes that it is time to stop "tiptoeing around my past - and other people's futures".

"I am determined to have a different ending to my story. I've decided, finally, to stick my head above the parapet so that I can take back my narrative and give a purpose to my past."

The timing of her article comes as former first lady Hillary Clinton contemplates her own run for the White House in 2016. Some Republicans have signalled that they believe the 1990s scandal is not out of bounds for the upcoming campaign.

The White House affair, which came to light in 1998, gripped the country and nearly led to the collapse of Bill Clinton's presidency.

It also made Ms Lewinsky a household name overnight, in large part, she writes, because of the burgeoning internet.

Ms Lewinsky writes that "thanks to the Drudge Report, I was also possibly the first person whose global humiliation was driven by the internet".

She adds that although her former boss "took advantage" of her, "any abuse came in the aftermath, when I was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position".

"The Clinton administration, the special prosecutor's minions, the political operatives on both sides of the aisle, and the media were able to brand me.

"And that brand stuck, in part because it was imbued with power."

Ms Lewinsky first spoke about the scandal in 1999 during an interview with Barbara Walters. She also addressed the issue in a book released that same year, entitled, Monica's Story.

In the Vanity Fair piece, Ms Lewinsky writes that she was first moved to speak about it again four years ago when an 18-year-old college student jumped to his death after footage of him kissing a man was broadcast on the internet.

She says her goal "is to get involved with efforts on behalf of victims of online humiliation and harassment and to start speaking on this topic in public forums."
