A majority of Americans say they're dissatisfied with the nation's government and how well it works, a Gallup poll released Wednesday indicated.

The 65 percent who said they were dissatisfied is up 5 percentage points since last year and nips the previous high of 64 percent recorded in 2012, results indicated.

Gallup said one reason Americans were dissatisfied with how the government is working is their belief that it is too big and powerful. Two-thirds of Americans -- 66 percent -- said they are unhappy with the size and power of the federal government. About two-thirds of Americans have expressed this view consistently since at least 2011, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews with 1,018 adults Jan. 5-8. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
