A salmonella outbreak linked to imported cucumbers from Mexico has sickened at least 558 people -- including 18 in Washington state -- and led to three deaths, health officials said Tuesday.
At least 112 people have been hospitalized in the still-growing outbreak linked to slicing cucumbers distributed by Andrew & Williams Fresh Produce in San Diego, Calif.
Deaths tied to the Salmonella Poona outbreak have been reported in Arizona, California and Texas. Illnesses have now been reported in 33 states.
Cases that occured after Aug. 28 might not be reported yet due to a lag between when a person gets sick and confirmation that he or she is part of an outbreak.
Salmonella bacteria can cause illness between 12 hours and three days after exposure to contaminated food. Most people recover without treatment, but in some cases, salmonella can cause illness severe enough to warrant hospitalization.
